The amount of time American consumers spend on the Internet with mobile apps surpassed that of desktop Internet usage in January 2014. According to research done by comScore, during that month, 46.6 percent of total time American’s spent on the Internet was with mobile apps, 45.1 percent was spent on desktop computers and 8.3 percent was spent on mobile browsers. With that said, it was only a matter of time before this happened as the use of mobile and tablet devices has been on the rise for some time now as is shown in the following data:
According to comScore, during Q4 of 2013, the amount of U.S. mobile subscribers who own a smartphone reached 65.2 percent, an increase of 11 percent from this time in the previous year.
As of December 2013, 44 percent of U.S. online consumers own a tablet, a six percent increase from the previous year, according to estimates by the Consumer Electronics Association.
With that said, businesses must pursue omni-channel strategies in order to meet the consumer how, when and where they choose to shop. Further, when a business uses multiple channels to reach its customers, consistency is key. With eCommerce, one way to obtain consistency across channels is with an integrated web store that implements responsive web design. Learn more about responsive web design in this blog post.
These elements are also crucial for B2B organizations that may be used to sales via telephone, fax and catalog orders. However, these organizations should not overlook selling online, as B2B eCommerce was a $559 billion industry in 2013. Read more here.
IDG Global did a Mobile Survey in 2014 of 23,500 executives and consumers from 43 different countries. One of the questions executives were asked pertained to when they did research on smartphones or tablets for products of services they intend to purchase for their business. There results were as follows:
During their commute:
- 42 percent on a smartphone
- 30 percent on a tablet
Work hours/in the office:
- 69 percent on a smartphone
- 71 percent on a tablet
Evenings:
- 73 percent on a smartphone
- 82 percent on s tablet
Weekends:
- 51 percent on a smartphone
- 64 percent on a tablet
Further, after researching a product using their smartphone or tablet, 93 percent of executives will later purchase that product via the Internet using a laptop or desktop computer.
The demand is no longer just to have a self-service web store. Consumers now demand numerous channels they can use to conduct product research, do price comparisons, make purchases and more. They want a similar experience across these different channels as well. And further, these demands apply to B2C and B2B organizations alike.
