Lean manufacturing transformation is an increasingly critical part of staying competitive in today’s manufacturing environments. In order to successfully go lean, manufacturers need the right ERP backbone to support the transformation. Here are three success stories on lean manufacturing transformation with Microsoft Dynamics AX.
Dell’s Manufacturing Operations Gets Lean with Microsoft Dynamics AX
In order to compete in a rapidly changing manufacturing landscape, Dell began a lean transformation. Microsoft Dynamics AX is now in place at seven of Dell’s eight manufacturing facilities. The Microsoft Dynamics solution acts as the company’s core Manufacturing Execution System (MES), while allowing the company to streamline operations using lean principles and industry best practices.
“We use Microsoft Dynamics AX end-to-end. It handles everything from the raw materials coming in the front door of the facility, to kitting and material handling, all the way to our burn process through to shipping out the back door to our customers.”
Matt Griffiths, Executive Director of IT Manufacturing, Dell
Equipment Manufacturer Rochester Gauges Goes Lean with Dynamics AX
Since 1958, Rochester Gauges has been manufacturing liquid-level gauges for original equipment manufacturers in the industrial, propane, and aerospace industries. After a pilot Lean Manufacturing project with Dynamics AX in 2007 reduced cycle times by almost 90 percent and cut lead times by 67 percent, the company converted its entire United States operation to a Lean manufacturing model using Microsoft Dynamics AX in 2013.
“AX 2012 enables us to run our company in a truly Lean way—without fighting with our software. It’s the only ERP solution on the market that can do that.”
Brian Battershell, CFO, Rochester Gauges
Cutting Tools Manufacturer Adopts Lean Principals with Dynamics AX
Dellas designs, manufactures, and markets worldwide a comprehensive line of diamond-layered blades and other cutting tools for a great variety of materials and industries. Dellas had already, to a high degree, adjusted its manufacturing processes to lean-manufacturing practices but wanted to use Microsoft Dynamics AX more extensively to support this endeavor in a globally consistent manner. Having evolved toward a lean-manufacturing operation during recent years, Dellas is now able to manage its business with an ERP system that fully reflects lean standards.
“Behind the scenes, we have all the information we need to run a lean company and operate much more efficiently. Without adding complications to workers’ busy days, we can improve the way the business works. In addition, we can forecast more reliably, negotiate more advantageous procurement terms for raw materials, achieve better contract terms, and time the delivery of goods better.”
Daniele Ferrari, CEO, Dellas
