The Customer Implementation Readiness team at Microsoft validates AX 2012 functionality for specific scenarios. This document is one in a series of blog posts that describe the scenarios that we have validated, and how we validated them.
Scenario
This case study is part of a scenario where we validate end to end serial product tracking from creation of a serial product in AX, purchasing the product, stocking inventory and shipping the product to customer.
Steps in setting up serial product tracking for this case study are as follows:
- Create Serial Product
- Purchase and Receive Serial Product in Inventory
- Sell and Ship the Serial Product
- Return, Repair and Ship the Serial Product

Detailed validation steps
Set up Tracking Dimension Groups = Serial
In the AX 2012 R3 client, log in to company USRT.
Go to Product information management > Setup > Dimension groups > Tracking Dimension groups and create a new Tracking Dimension group.
Choose Serial Number as Active and checked for Physical Inventory (per this scenario)
Set up Number Group for Serial Numbers = Automated Numbering
In the AX 2012 R3 client, log in to company USRT.
Go to Inventory management > Setup > Dimensions > Number groups and create a new Number group.
Define Number Sequence and activate for appropriate transactions (per scenario).
Set up automated numbering by selecting Allocation on physical update per 1 quantity.
Create a Serial Product
In the AX 2012 R3 client, log in to company USRT.
Go to Product information management > Common > Released products and create a new Released Product.
Select Product type = Item and Product subtype = Product and select a Product number
Choose Tracking dimension group = Serial and add in data in other fields as appropriate for e.g. select Item Model Group, Item Group, Storage dimension group; select appropriate units of measures for Inventory unit, Purchase unit, Sales unit and BOM unit; and select Purchase and Sales Tax Groups
Click ok to create the product.
7. Edit the product and go to Manage inventory section > Tracking> Serial number group
8. Select a value for Serial number group (= SerialAuto)
8. Go to Purchase section of the Product > Prices> Price and add a Purchase price for the Product
9. Go to Sell section of the Product > Base sales price> Price and add a Sales price for the Product
10. Go to Manage Costs section of the Product> Prices> Price and add a Cost price for the Product
11. Add other appropriate values as needed.
12. Close form.
Serial product is now available for usage in AX2012 R3.
